The dos and don’ts when hiring a skip: how to avoid the common mistakes

Dos and donts when hiring a skip

As we’ve explored in a previous blog post, there are several compelling reasons for hiring a skip. When done properly, it’s a neat and convenient waste management solution. Here are some tips to help you avoid common mistakes:

Dos:

  1. Do choose the right skip size: Assess your waste volume accurately and select the appropriate size. A smaller skip may lead to overflowing waste, while an oversized one will be a waste of money.
  2. Do check skip hire regulations: Familiarise yourself with local regulations and any permits required. For example, placing a skip or builders’ materials on the public highway – which includes roads and pavements – calls for a road permit. This must be in date and valid for the type of waste you are disposing of (we take care of this for you.)
  3. Do check what can go in a skip: Make sure you only put acceptable items in your skip. The skip collection team might refuse to take your waste away or you might be charged extra for the time and effort it takes to rectify the problem.
  4. Do consider the skip’s location: It should be placed on stable ground where it won’t obstruct roads, pavements or access points. For increased safety, consider the use of skip lights and cones (we also supply these where required).
  5. Do cover the skip when not in use: This prevents unauthorised dumping, keeps rainwater out and reduces odours.
  6. Do load the skip properly: Distribute the waste evenly and compact it as you fill up the skip. This will maximise its capacity and reduce the need for additional skips.
  7. Do speak to your skip hire company: Discuss your requirements and any specific needs you may have. Our team can offer valuable advice and ensure a smooth process.

Don’ts:

  1. Don’t overload the skip: Filling the skip above its designated level is unsafe and may result in waste falling off during transportation.
  2. Don’t dispose of prohibited items: Certain items, such as tyres, fridges, batteries and medical waste, are not allowed. Check our list of items that can’t go into a skip.
  3. Don’t burn waste in the skip: Burning waste is both hazardous and illegal. It can damage the skip and poses a risk of fire.
  4. Don’t attempt to move the skip on your own: Skips are heavy and can be challenging to manoeuvre. Leave the placement and relocation to the professionals.
  5. Don’t rush the process: Take your time to sort and load the waste properly. Hastiness can lead to errors and may result in additional costs.
  6. Don’t hire from unlicensed providers: Always choose a reputable and licensed skip hire company to ensure proper waste disposal and compliance with regulations.
  7. Don’t ignore weight restrictions: Overloaded skips may exceed weight limits, leading to additional charges or the need to offload some waste before collection.

By following these handy tips, your skip hire experience should be a smooth process, and you will be contributing to responsible waste disposal practices.
