Business waste services: what you need to know

Business waste

Most business owners only think about their waste services when something goes wrong. Maybe the bins are overflowing, an unexpected invoice arrives, or you suddenly realise your contract renews automatically… right after the deadline to change it.

We’re here to remove the mystery, the jargon and the eye-watering surprises. This is your no-nonsense guide to how business waste really works, why it costs what it does, and how to compare quotes without needing a detective’s licence.

1) Why business waste can’t go into a household bin

It’s tempting to think: “It’s only a few cardboard boxes… surely the council won’t mind?” But legally, business waste must not go into a household bin – even if you run your business from home.

Under UK law, business waste is treated differently. It has to be collected by a licensed waste carrier, transferred with a waste transfer note, and disposed of in line with environmental regulations. Household collections are paid for by residents through council tax. Business waste isn’t part of that system.

Putting commercial waste into a domestic bin means you’re risking:
▪️ Fines
▪️ Contract termination
▪️ A very awkward chat with your local council

In short. It’s just not worth it. A proper trade waste service keeps you compliant, covered and collected on time.

2) Why waste service prices increase each year

Every year, on 1 April, landfill tax increases. Like clockwork.

This government-set charge is designed to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill, nudge businesses towards recycling and encourage waste-reduction strategies.

When landfill tax rises, disposal costs rise with it. That’s why most waste service providers increase their prices on 1 April too. It’s the industry norm.

It’s also why most waste contracts run from 1 April to 31 March. Which brings us neatly to…

3) What you need to know about your waste services contract

Here’s the part many businesses don’t realise:

To switch providers for the new contract year, you’ll usually need to give notice by 31 December.

Most providers require three months’ notice, and they only accept cancellations at the end of your contract term – typically 31 March.

In practice, that means:
▪️ December is your window to shop around
▪️ Leave it too late and you could be rolled into another year automatically
▪️ If you’re unhappy with your current deal, act before the mince pies disappear from the office

December is the perfect time to review costs, check your terms, and – yes – get a few alternative quotes to make sure you’re getting the best value.

4) How to compare waste service quotes

This is where things can get… interesting.

Most providers break their pricing into multiple parts, which can make a quote look cheaper than it really is. This can include:
▪️ Service fees
▪️ Bin rental
▪️ Duty of Care fees
▪️ Excess weight charges
▪️ Plus some extra “admin” surprises

Suddenly, that bargain quote isn’t so cheap after all.

At Hamptons Group, we like to keep things blissfully simple:
✔️ One flat rate
✔️ No bin rental fees
✔️ No Duty of Care fees
✔️ No excess weight charges
✔️ No other hidden fees

Your only requirement?
The bin lid must close.

If it doesn’t, you’ll need a second bin or a bigger container. No drama. No mystery maths. Just a system that works.

So when you’re comparing quotes, make sure to ask:
🔹 What’s included?
🔹 What counts as an extra?
🔹 What will I pay if my bin is heavier one week
🔹 How will prices change on 1 April
🔹 Are there any hidden fees?
🔹 Can I actually speak to someone local if there’s an issue?

Transparency matters – especially when waste is involved.
