Choosing the right skip size is crucial to ensure efficient waste disposal and cost-effectiveness. Skips come in various sizes, and selecting the appropriate one depends on the type and scale of your project. Here’s a guide to help you decide.
Assess the scale of your project
Do you need the skip for a garden clear-out, bathroom refurb, house extension, new kitchen or a major building project? How much and what type of waste will you be disposing of (e.g. green waste, soil and rubble, plasterboard, wood, scrap metal, bulky items including electrical equipment or general waste)? Speak to your waste management company or skip provider if you’re unsure how much waste is likely to be generated. At the Hamptons Group, we are always happy to recommend the appropriate size.
Understand the skip sizes
Skips come in various sizes, typically measured in cubic yards and ranging from 2–16 cubic yards. We offer two types of mini skips (2 and 3 yards), two midi skips (5 and 6 yards) and two standard skips (8 and 12 yards), as well as two types of roll-on/roll-off, or ro-ro, skips (20 and 35 yards). The larger the skip, the higher the rental cost.
If you’re unsure about the exact size you’ll need, it’s often better to go for a slightly larger skip than risk overflowing a smaller one, as overfilled skips may not be safe to transport and that can lead to additional costs.

Consider access and space
Ensure that you have enough room to place the skip. Consider any constraints, such as narrow drives or limited access points on construction sites. Don’t forget that you’ll need a permit if the skip is to be positioned on a public road. Each council has different costs and lead times, ranging from 2–10 days, so make sure to book your skip in good time.
Plan for multiple loads
For large projects generating a significant amount of waste, consider scheduling multiple skip deliveries and pickups to avoid delays and ensure continuous waste removal.
Recycle what you can
Separate recyclable materials from general waste to maximise space and keep landfill waste to a minimum. This may allow you to use a smaller skip.
Compare costs
Obtain quotes from a few skip hire companies to compare prices, delivery and pickup fees. Factor in any additional charges for overloading or extended rental periods.
Environmental considerations
If your project generates environmentally sensitive waste, like hazardous materials, consult with waste management professionals to ensure proper disposal.
